Just in front of the city, in the bay, there are 3 small
islands, “les iles du Frioul”. On one of them, the smallest one, you can find
the “Chateau d’If” the prison-castle famous because of the Monte Cristo novel
“the man in the iron mask”, written by Alexandre Dumas.
The two other one had two forts to protect the bay
(nowadays in ruins). There is also a dike between them, built in the 19th
century to create a wharf. The yellow fever in America forced the authorities to put the
boats in quarantine away from the main land.
We spent the day walking around, under the sun and finally
a bit of heat, in front of a spectacular view over Marseille.
A really beautiful last day here.
